“through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.”
William James Sidis, Terence Tao, Marilyn vos Savant—do you recognize these names? Here are a few that might be a giveaway: Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, and Sir Isaac Newton. This is a very short list of people considered to be among the smartest who ever lived. Now, here is another short list: Blaise Pascal, Leonhard Euler, Michael Faraday, YoungHoon Kim, Francis Collins, and King Solomon. Other than Sir Isaac Newton, what distinguishes the second list from the first? The people on the second list are also considered to be among the smartest people who ever lived, but they are also people who have been open and clear about their faith in Jesus as their Savior. A young man once came to me after graduating from graduate school at a prestigious Ivy League university. He had been involved in our ministry as a teenager and had always been very open about his faith. When he came home, he shared that he had given up on his faith because the smartest people he knew—his graduate school professors—did not believe the God story. It saddened me greatly, but I began sending him testimonies of these and other brilliant men and women who comfortably combined their faith in God with their intellectual pursuits. He loved Tolkien and Lewis, so it was fun to explore their faith with him through their writings as well. Recently, he has renewed his belief in God. His understanding of Jesus as his Savior is still developing. The knowledge Solomon refers to is the knowledge of God. It is also the knowledge of the universe and all its contents. Today, acknowledge the brilliance of our Creator. #BeTheEdge
