“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.”

A number of years ago, I was audited. Yep, I was a poor, low-income youth minister, and I got audited. When it was all over, I asked my accountant why they audited me, and he said he was curious about that too. When he asked the tax guy why he was told, “This guy makes so little money and wrote off so much in business losses, we just knew he was up to something shady.” He followed that by saying, “We discovered he’s just the world’s worst businessman.” By the way, it ended up that they wanted $146 back from the thousands they owed me. I’m always entertained looking back and realizing God called me to lead a ministry of business leaders with the dubious title of “the world’s worst businessman.” Probably shouldn’t get business advice from me—just encouragement and opportunities to learn how to take your faith more effectively into your certainly very successful business. Solomon would not see me as the prudent businessperson. I no longer move forward on a business opportunity without running it by some very smart and prudent businesspeople. But this verse is much broader than that. Prudent means “a person who is wise, cautious, and farsighted.” They see danger ahead and sidestep it—or, better yet, flee from it.
