In the 15 or so years I’ve been doing these daily devotionals, I’m pretty sure I have only used this verse once—and that was during the years I went through every verse in Proverbs. I’ve always loved this verse. There is just so much in it. There is probably a book or two hidden within these few sentences. Nicole C. Mullen has a song that my wife and I began and ended each day with during her cancer battle that reflects much of what we read in this passage. It reminds us of the amazing difference between human abilities and God’s unlimited power. There is also a very cool and theologically mysterious reference to His Son. We now know that it was His Son who did all the things described in this verse. Scripture tells us that it was Jesus Himself who created everything on behalf of the Trinity. Part of the beauty of this verse is that the writer was reminding us of how little we know and understand about God. Many theologians also believe the reference to “his son” in this passage was originally a reference to Israel. Nothing about that understanding takes away from the fact that today we can answer the inquiry not only in the broad context of Israel, but also in the specific context of the second Person of the triune God—Jesus Christ. As you look into nature—whether it’s a sunset, the birth of a child, or the emotions of the human heart—you are reminded of the awesome power and creativity of our Creator God.
