Over the years, I have seen, from the business world to the sports world to individual families, the difference that righteous or wicked leadership makes in the lives of those they lead. I’ve watched how people respond very differently depending on who is in charge. I’ve seen mean, selfish coaches who win, but my goodness, what a difference there is in the way a team responds to a coach who is kind, caring, and genuinely invested in them. Businesses and families are no different. Even the celebration after a victory or championship reaches a different level when a coach has led in a righteous way. You’ve probably experienced both kinds of leaders and know exactly what I’m talking about. Over the years, I’ve observed some pretty heated rivalries in sports and, at times, have gotten to know the coaches on a personal level. Early in our children’s lives, my wife and I talked about how we would much rather have our child on an 3-9 team led by a godly person than on an 12-0 team led by a mean human being. Without a doubt, godly people win championships just as often—if not more often—than those who aren’t. The difference is that their motivation is not their own glory, but the growth and well-being of the young people they coach and the God they serve.
