Casting a glance at your financial situation does not mean it is not a legitimate concern. As a matter of fact, Scripture also encourages being a good steward of what you have been blessed with. It is hard to do that without paying some attention to it. It is very irresponsible, and unbiblical, to be blessed with resources and then squander them or manage them poorly. Solomon is making it clear in this verse that riches are fleeting. Even if they last a lifetime, when you are gone, their value to you is gone as well. In a place where the streets are constructed with what we currently see as having amazing value—gold—it is easy to see why what we have here is irrelevant there. We have all heard many stories of people with great wealth who woke up one day and found it gone. The stock market crash of 1929 contains countless stories that illustrate that truth. Our relationship with God lasts forever. Scripture tells us that only the Word of God and the souls of men will last. Obviously, that is where our focus should be.
