“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”

When I was in high school, there was a musical making its way around churches that included a song that went, “There’s power in the name, power in the name, power in the name of Jesus.” Solomon is basically telling us the same thing here. Although he did not know the name of Jesus at the time, he certainly knew the name of the Lord. Yahweh is a rendering of the Hebrew name for God that reflects tremendous reverence. The vowels were omitted because the name was considered too holy to spell out or pronounce casually. There was such awe and respect for God that even writing His name was approached with great care. A couple of years ago, my pastor told the story of a college basketball player who went on to become a famous NBA player. While in college, this player attended our church and was part of a small group led by he led. My pastor told him that he often read interviews in which he mentioned God and that he was proud of him for doing so. The player replied, “The interesting thing is that I always say Jesus, but when it comes out in print, they change it to God.” Today, it is generally safe to say you believe in God. There are so many different gods people claim to believe in, including nature, success, or even themselves. Jesus told us that when we have seen Him, we have seen the Father. He also told us that He and the Father are one. The name of Jesus, when not used as a curse word, can be offensive to some people because it presents a specific and exclusive claim about who God is. Yet for those who truly know Him, Jesus is anything but offensive. He is Savior, Lord, Redeemer, and Friend. Today, experience the power found in the name of Jesus. #BeTheEdge
