There is a long list of CEOs, artists, and celebrities who are notoriously known for being mean and abusive. Perhaps you have worked for one. After dealing with one such person, I remember a friend who was also a friend of his telling me, “He’s a jerk, but he’s our jerk.” I thought that was a dumb way of thinking. Steve Jobs, Pablo Picasso, Ray Kroc, and even Thomas Edison were known as that type of person by those who worked and lived with them. Many of them were excused, like the person I just mentioned, because they were successful in their arena. Solomon makes no such excuses. An article about Steve Jobs’s cruel behavior tried to justify his actions by claiming they flowed from his perfectionist focus on work. Somehow, demanding perfection excused his behavior. Solomon reveals the true issue beneath the surface of the unfriendly perfectionist: they are selfish. And no matter how intelligent they are, they are foolish.
