“Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.”
It is so easy to read this verse. It is so easy to quote this verse to ourselves and others. But the reality of raising children these days is that it can be a very difficult challenge. This verse talks about the intentional, loving correction of a child—one of the most delicate balances and difficult concepts to grasp, practice consistently, and apply effectively. Adding to that challenge is the need to learn and understand the personality of each child. It is not a one-size-fits-all process. In the business world, we maximize the abilities of our teams most effectively when we learn the individual personalities and strengths of our leaders and team members. Jesus had the unique ability to meet someone and see directly into their heart. As a result, He would respond to them based on what they needed and how to most effectively minister to them. You could even go beyond that and say, truthfully, that He had created them and knew their personalities completely. We do not have that advantage. As a result, we must learn our children, learn our employees, and learn anyone whose life we want to influence for the Kingdom and help grow. If God wanted us to see directly into people’s hearts, He would have given us that ability. Obviously, there is something inherently good in the process of learning about others. Today, truly learn the uniqueness of God’s children. #BeTheEdge
