“The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh—an inspired utterance. This man’s utterance to Ithiel: ‘I am weary, God, but I can prevail.’”
The words inspired utterance sound like a very cool thing to have. I like to think that when I teach or preach, I’m sharing an inspired utterance. Once I learned that the Hebrew for these words carried the meaning “a heavy burden.” And it also has the sense of being a very weighty message from God. That does not sound so fun. That actually brings a seriousness to the message that can be missed. I’ve known ministers who have prepared to speak a message that they didn’t want to, a word from the Lord that caused sweat and tears during the preparation. It makes me ponder what message God might have for me that would weigh the messenger down the way Agur was in this chapter..Is there a sin controlling you? Or is there a call from God you are trying not to answer? I suspect most of us have areas of our story God wants to speak into that we are not hearing. It is not necessarily intentional ignorance. It could be one of many blind spots we all have..When I was a young minister, I took great pride in pointing out others’ blind spots to assist their growth. You probably noticed what was wrong with that sentence. Great pride and pointing out their blind spots are neither good nor God-honoring. Now I would only approach their issue with prayer, great fear, and a convincing word from God. I seldom ever do it. Today let God confront sin. #BeTheEdge
