“Evildoers do not understand what is right, but those who seek the Lord understand it fully.”
Evildoers sounds like a throwback to cartoon or superhero bad guys. The extent of the evil they represent is sometimes hard to imagine. Some other, and perhaps more common, translations for the word evildoers are evil people, evil men, wicked, or ungodly. These people are so blinded by their sin that they lose the ability to discern right from wrong. In a way, this is a discernment verse. Those of us who pursue God, who seek Him—particularly in His Word—gain insight and wisdom, which enables us to discern right from wrong. One of the things I like most about this verse is that while evildoers do not understand what is right, but we fully understand. I wish fully understanding what is right meant that it is what we always do. We don’t have to look far into our journey through the day to realize that’s not true. But in knowing what is right, we always have the choice to be led to God. Our challenge is not knowing what is right—it is doing what we know. Not only do we gain insight because we seek God, but unlike wicked, we have the added incredible gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit to prompt, correct, and whisper what we need to hear to enhance that discernment in our journey. Fully knowing what is right is a gift, but like any gift, it has to be received appropriately. Today, seek God and live wisely.
