“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.”
My 93-year-old mom is in hospice care. I received a call the other day saying she only had hours—maybe two days—left before she went to meet Jesus. I began making a variety of preparations to get down there and be with her. This was a very sudden call, and it caught all of us off guard. After speaking with the hospice nurse, we realized the source of our information was not very knowledgeable or accurate. Following conversations with my mom and her caregivers, we discovered she is only slightly different today than she was six months ago. At this rate, she may outlive me. Solomon, Jesus, and all of Scripture make it clear: we have no idea when our last breath in this earth suit will take place. Just like the angels told His followers, as they stood on the hill looking up to where He had just gone, that He would return in the same way—and just as Jesus told them that no one knows the day or the hour of His return—we also do not know the day or hour of His return or our departure to be with Him. That uncertainty serves us well. It keeps us on our toes. I believe the disciples lived the remainder of their lives on earth with one eye on the mission Jesus left them and one eye on the clouds, anticipating His imminent return. When we live with a sense that Jesus could come at any moment, it has a purifying effect on our lives. I’ve often asked teenagers what they want to be caught doing when Jesus returns. I’ll ask you that question now as well. I’ve caught myself at times and wondered if what I was doing in that moment is something I would want to be doing when He returns. Live in anticipation of the imminent return of your Savior. #BeTheEdge
“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.” Acts 1:11 NIV
