“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.”

The Greek for the word “stupid” means senseless, brutish, foolish or stupid. I’m always entertained—though I know I shouldn’t be—when Solomon, or at the very least our translators, use the word “stupid.” But that’s exactly what it is when we not only ignore or run from discipline or correction, but actually hate it. Now, I can go down as one who doesn’t enjoy it or particularly like it. As a matter of fact, there are times when I push back against it. But ultimately, I recognize the value in being disciplined and corrected by wise and godly people. And when it is God’s Word that we are being corrected by, then there is no excuse for anything other than obedience. It doesn’t mean we will always enjoy it, but it certainly means that when God speaks, we must respond in recognition of who He is. We don’t respond because He will hurt us or “get us.” We respond because He is God, He loves us, and He longs for the very best in our story. Not even a parent can always claim that. I certainly know there were times I disciplined my children when I was just annoyed or wanted to be left alone. God never has that issue. His correction, whether through others placed in our lives or through His Word and Spirit directly, is truly a gift. The day we begin to recognize it as such, we reach a whole new level of spiritual maturity. Today, receive discipline with honor and respect. #BeTheEdge
