“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”
I was once in a small group at a conference. The subject of the meeting was humility. At one point, we were instructed to grade ourselves on our humility based on the speaker’s teaching points. I remember nothing from that particular seminar other than the guy sitting next to me turning and saying, “I’m the humblest person I know.” I laughed. He was offended. He truly did not see the paradox of his comment. Genuine humility is not seen in self-promotion. It’s actually seldom seen in self-deprecation either. A great picture of humility is seen in Jesus—the one living human being who could have proclaimed His humility and been correct, yet He never did. Humility is seen in actions, not words. When the Creator of the universe—the One who created every living, breathing human being—willingly lays down on a cross and allows those He created to drive nails through His hands and feet without a word, that is an expression of genuine, deep humility. I doubt anyone has attempted to drive nails into your hands, but even in our story, there are times when pride would have us push back or seek to reciprocate an unkind action. In those moments, we are given an opportunity to humbly accept and move on. There may be times when we should stand, resist, and perhaps even fight—but when pride is what drives us, humility says, “Let it go.” Today, survey your story and see if there are areas where humility would tell you to quietly move on. #BeTheEdge
