“The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.”
Joy or grief. When you consider the lives you interact with on a daily basis, would they consider you a source of joy or grief? This word grief means sorrow, heaviness of spirit, or deep sadness. It is the contrast between a child who brings joy, happiness, and even brightness into a parent’s world, and one who brings sadness. Many translations use the word heaviness. I’ve been around both types of people, and I’m sure you have as well. Obviously, those who bring joy are the ones we seek out, while those who bring grief, over time, we tend to avoid—and maybe even move out of our story completely. As followers of Jesus, we should be known as a steady source of joy. This joy is not about silliness or constant laughter and fun, but it does mean gladness—people are glad when you’re around. Sometimes it’s because you are a quiet, steady presence; at other times, it’s because you lighten and brighten the mood. Whatever the situation, we can imagine Jesus walking in and there being an instant sense of calm, peace, confidence, and great hope. That is what we, as His representatives, need to become known for. I certainly look for those people to be in my life. Thankfully, I have found a great group who fill that role regularly. Today, be a source of the Savior’s joy. #BeTheEdge
