“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.”
The world has always been a dangerous place. Sure, there are places where we feel very safe, and we certainly are safer from certain things in certain environments. But ultimately, Satan can reach us when we are unprotected. If we are physically unprotected, danger has the opportunity to attack. When we are mentally unprotected, evil can infiltrate our thoughts with lies, which, according to James, when conceived, give birth to sin. Socially, we can quickly place ourselves in situations that put us at risk. Spiritually, walking away from certain disciplines and practices puts the intimacy of our walk with our Savior at great risk. The word simple in this verse refers to those who are gullible and naïve, but especially to those who fail to foresee the danger of leaving themselves unprotected and exposed. Scripture makes it clear that the only truly safe place—the only refuge—is securely in the hands of God. The dangers that come at us in all areas of life—whether physical, mental, social, or spiritual—are only overcome by the power and presence of the King of kings and Lord of lords. It isn’t that the average person wants to pay the penalty of living at risk, apart from the safety God offers. More often, it’s a lack of foresight or a failure to truly believe that God alone is our source of safety and strength. Period. Today, find refuge and peace in our Creator and Savior. #BeTheEdge
