“Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?”
As I read this, I’m actually sitting on an exam table at the doctor’s office, waiting for him to look at how an injury in my foot is healing. When I read this verse, I cringed at the idea of my foot getting scorched. My injury was caused by a burn—very unpleasant. Solomon references this kind of injury as the result of walking barefoot on hot coals and compares it to sexual sin. His point is basically that playing with sin will get you burned. Not necessarily physically, but certainly spiritually. The consequence is similar to burned feet in that we will suffer not only an injury, a painful condition that heals slowly. It’s an injury that hurts every time you step on that foot. I’ve learned from my own injury that the pain is there no matter how padded and bandaged it is. Sin has consequences. Sexual sin, according to Scripture, not only burns the skin but also damages the soul. It impacts us internally as well as externally. All injuries hurt. In my long and clumsy life, I have experienced many different types. Very few hurt—and continue to hurt—as much as a serious burn. Thankfully, Jesus heals our wounds and transforms our scars into testimonies. Today, flee sin and avoid being scorched. “BeTheEdge
