“The wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion.”
Here are a few stories found in a quick search: Thomas “Cannibal” Cottingham (2015): A 27-year-old Delaware man was hailed as a Good Samaritan for dying while protecting a woman and her baby he did not know from a knife-wielding attacker in Wilmington. Spencer Germany (2026): A Houston man was shot and killed while attempting to protect an elderly woman he did not know. Texas Good Samaritan (2025): A man was stabbed in the chest while defending a pregnant woman he did not know from a thief in Texas. Soldiers in Bar Fight (2016): Family and friends honored soldiers killed while defending a woman they did not know during a bar fight. These stories go on and on. These are what I picture when I read about someone being as bold as a lion. These might not all have been righteous; however, Solomon lets us know that this image reflects what a righteous person looks like—someone who boldly steps into the path of a pursuer. The wicked, people of low character, run scared not only from real challenges, but they also flee from the mere thought of imagined threats. This is the typical comparison Solomon makes between two diametrically opposed kinds of character. I want to be around bold people like the ones described in the stories above—people protecting vulnerable individuals they don’t even know. Today, live rightly with God and be bold. #BeTheEdge
