“The name of the Lord is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”
I’m a movie guy. I like everything about the process—from making to watching. As far as themes go, there is no shortage of movies where someone is in need of a hero, or at times is looking for a place of safety. If spy movies are your thing, then 2012’s Safe House with Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington is an exciting story of Reynolds’ character trying to get Denzel’s character from a discovered safe location to a new safe house. If you like zombies, then World War Z is all about people trying to barricade themselves safely in a location to protect themselves from the zombie rampage going on outside their doors. Whatever the storyline, we find that in real life we can, at times, look to things, places, or people to bring us safety. Solomon reminds us in this verse that the only truly safe place is in God’s presence. Whether it’s in a boat in the middle of a storm or on the backside of a desert in the Middle East, as long as we are with Jesus and His Father, it is the safest place to be. Peter discovered that being out on the water in the middle of the storm was a safer place to be than in the boat. It often flies in the face of logic to look for safety where God is leading. But if nothing else, history and Scripture are continual reminders that only God offers complete safety from what we fear most. Yesterday I had a conversation with my two youngest grandchildren about death. Kind of morbid—but they brought it up. My eight-year-old granddaughter informed me that she did not want to live to be 100, but that she thought 90 would be a sufficient age. At that point, she felt like she would be ready to go see all the people she loved who would be waiting for her in heaven. Then she began to describe heaven. A proper view of life and eternity is the first step in looking to the Author of real safety. Today, recognize that safety is found only where God has us—in His presence. #BeTheEdge
