“Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker; whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished.”
In this passage, Solomon reminds us again, as he has done in numerous places, that God is the Creator of everyone. No matter what status in life someone has, we all begin in the dust, being formed from the ground, and ultimately stand at the foot of the cross to decide what we will do with His sacrifice to redeem us. Everything in between is truly just stuff. What we do with that stuff is important insofar as we align it with two foundational truths: who our Creator is and who our Redeemer is. If we recognize God as the Author of our entire story, then we offer that stuff back to Him as a sacrifice that came from Him and use it to honor Him. If we don’t recognize Him for who He is, then we wrongly believe that stuff is ours, and we do with it whatever we want. That includes our careers, our families, our relationships, and everything in life. We would only have the audacity to mock people for their status in this world if we failed to recognize the hands that crafted them and what they bring during their time on this planet—much of which is only partly discernible to the human eye. If we could see those we might judge as the least through the eyes of God, we would be humbled. As Steve Brown says, if we could see them 100 years from now, and they are followers of Christ, we would be tempted to fall down and worship them. It is both daunting and powerful to ponder what our world would be like if we each treated one another as the divine, supernatural creations of the one eternal God and Savior. Today, when you look at or think about any other person, recognize their Father in them. #BeTheEdge
