“One who is full loathes honey from the comb, but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet.”
Early in my ministry, I remember telling one of my mentors how surprising it was that parents who did not attend church and were not particularly spiritual seemed to really embrace the ministry I was doing with their teenagers. I implied it must be because I was so good at it—and because I was such a good guy. As good mentors do, he quickly humbled me and let me know that most of those parents would have responded the same way whether I was doing a Christian ministry, working for the Mormon church, or serving with just about any other organization. They weren’t responding necessarily to my message, or even to my character or personality, as much as they were responding to someone who was showing interest and concern for their teenager. Their worry and concern over their teenagers, combined with a lack of knowing how to parent them through such a difficult stage, made them grateful. Very soon—while being humbled—I learned he was exactly right. Those parents were hungry for help with a child they loved. I offered a little honey—something that seemed sweet to the taste. Sadly, this is also how predators operate. Thankfully, what we offered was a direct line—an opportunity for a relationship with the King who loved them and created them. Too often, however, what is offered is the satisfaction of selfish and self-serving desires. We have seen church leaders at times who believe they themselves are a gift to their people. They fail to recognize that God has given them talents and gifts to point others toward Him as the only true gift to His people. Today, bring the Bread of Life—the only One who can satisfy the hunger that all people feel: Jesus. #BeTheEdge
