“One who is wise can go up against the city of the mighty and pull down the stronghold in which they trust.”
Solomon often refers to those who are wise or who pursue and acquire wisdom. At times, wisdom is representative of God Himself. In this verse, “the wise” refers to a person of deep insight and practical ability—someone who lives with great discernment and effectiveness. Obviously, those qualities come to a person who is walking in the wisdom of God and in a right relationship with Him. The person Solomon is referring to trusts in God and walks out that trust with the insight, discernment, and ability they have gained through years of relationship, obedience, learning, and intimacy with Him. The “city of the mighty” represents a city built on self-reliance. It is a place where those in charge believe they have the power to control outcomes and repel any force that might remove them from leadership or tear down their walls. Scripture often speaks of those who trust in things other than God to give them power and victory. We read of people who trust in horses and chariots to win wars. We are also warned about those who labor in vain, building walls and palaces without the strength and power of the Lord. Today, live wisely, put your trust in God alone, and walk in victory.
