“Wealth is worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.”

The Hebrew word for righteousness in this verse means moral rightness, justice, or uprightness. It is contrasted with wealth and is what brings deliverance. I’m a big fan of justice, and I’m also a believer in grace. However, living a just, upright, and moral life is the expected result of being a Spirit-led follower of Jesus. The power of right living is seen here in the assurance that it delivers us from death. The righteous—those covered by the sacrifice of Jesus on our behalf paying the price for our sin—are safe from the ravages of eternal death. Wealth cannot save us, nor can it travel with us. The old bumper sticker says there are no U-Hauls behind a hearse. It’s also true that “he who dies with the most toys still dies.” All of that is to say that life ends, and eternal life or eternal death is immediately upon us. There is no in-between. We face immediate consequences based on our choice about Jesus, and His righteousness alone makes the difference. Today, find peace in His salvation alone. #BeTheEdge
