“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
Independent thinking is often admired in our society. It can be seen as a character strength. I often encouraged my children when they were younger not to follow the crowd, to think for themselves, and to make decisions based on wisdom. I think most parents desire that for their kids. Solomon is encouraging a form of independence from the pressures of the world. What he is not encouraging is independence from God. It is often asked, “What does God want me seeking His guidance on, and what is just everyday stuff that I don’t need to bother Him with?” Good question. In other words, does God really care if I drink sweet or unsweetened tea? As a former type 1 diabetic, I know that caring for my body was important to Him. There are many things, both big and small, in your journey that God is interested in, and consultation with Him is never a bad idea. Hopefully, over time you become so in tune with His Spirit that you know His will in most areas. The point of this verse is developing a level of trust in God that allows you to walk in faith without hesitation. The word lean in this verse means “to rest comfortably and completely on.” Today, rest comfortably on God. #BeTheEdge
