“‘Let all who are simple come to my house!’ To those who have no sense she says…”

The person described in this verse appears often throughout Proverbs. I love when my grandchildren ask questions about spiritual things. It’s a joy to dig into what they’re trying to understand and then watch their faces brighten when the light breaks through. And it truly does break through—because God delights in revealing Himself both to innocent seekers and to those who earnestly pursue His truth. The “simple” person here is not foolish or unintelligent. The word Solomon uses in this passage means innocent and gullible. It describes someone unwise but not rebellious, easily led astray but still teachable. It calls for guidance rather than condemnation. There is a gentleness woven through this verse, a compassionate encouragement that invites the teacher to instruct with patience and hopeful expectation. And it encourages us as learners, too. We are to come seeking the deeper things of God with humility and hunger. Those who have “no sense” are slightly different from the simple. They are the ones who “lack common sense and understanding, especially concerning God’s moral and practical guidance, and are prone to ignoring wisdom’s call to right, honest, and true living—choosing instead crooked or deceitful paths.” (AI Resource) They stand in a more dangerous place. They are inclined to dismiss the invitation to learn and walk in God’s wisdom. Today, choose to be the one who is always seeking more of God’s light. #BeTheEdge
