“Desired without knowledge is not good—how much more will hasty feet miss the way!”
I don’t know about you, but when I desire something, it seldom comes with a little voice screaming, “Self-control! Self-control! Self-control!” Coupling knowledge with desire is something that’s developed over time and is a sign of maturity. One reason young people get in trouble so easily is that they act on desire without even considering the need for wise counsel. Children are notorious for that. I’ve found myself visiting families of teenagers—or even picking some up at the police department in the middle of the night—because of this “desire without knowledge” condition. It is uniquely human to be able to think through our actions. However, even mice and other pets can be trained to understand the consequences of their actions and respond accordingly. Hasty feet are usually the result of moving aggressively toward something based purely on desire—without thinking it through. One of the great gifts of becoming a follower of Christ is the indwelling Holy Spirit. Even when I don’t understand why, there’s often an instant check on my desires that causes me to slow down and consider what God would have me do in that moment. I cannot tell you how many blunders and disasters that voice has saved me from. In the chaos, the sign of true knowledge is to listen—and then respond according to what you know from Scripture and the voice of God. Check your desires with God. #BeTheEdge
