“There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.”
If a direction in life appears correct, how can it lead to such a destructive outcome? There are many choices in life that clearly lead to destructive consequences, even death. For example, when someone considers trying heroin, there’s very little doubt about where that path leads. Choosing to commit adultery, if considered honestly, clearly presents a high risk of destroying a marriage. It’s very instructive to realize that relying solely on our own wisdom and understanding can lead us to choose a path that is so dangerously wrong, it can bring death — spiritually, relationally, and even physically. Following our desires can feel right. A lot has been written over the years about the danger of trusting in our feelings. Back in the 1970s, there was a popular saying: “If it feels right, do it.” A much wiser saying, though, is: “Feelings will lie to you.” In Solomon’s time, it was believed that feelings came from the liver, not the heart. Can you imagine saying, “I love you with all my liver”? Yeah… that doesn’t work. Neither does trusting it to lead your life. When it comes to determining the right way to live, trust only in God. His Word, His Spirit, and His prompting are trustworthy. Let Him lead you into life. #BeTheEdge
