“Like a coating of silver dross on earthenware are fervent lips with an evil heart.”

I just read this to my 7-year-old grandson. His response was that he would never sell someone a plastic fork covered with silver. He said that’s basically stealing. To him, earthenware somehow meant an eating utensil. The point here is that even at his tender age he recognized the fraud and hypocrisy described by the writer in this passage. Few people, even those with an evil heart, want to be thought of as evil. Most want to be considered good. As a grad student in counseling psychology, I was taught by a number of professors the fallacy that everyone was basically born good. They argued that someone’s social situation is what made them bad or led them to make bad choices. As followers of Christ, we understand that we are all broken at birth, and that without a Savior—a rescuer, a healer—to enter our spirit, forgive our brokenness, and begin the transformation of forming us into the image of our Savior, no one would ever be good. Therefore, it is only natural to try to appear better than we are. Thank God that as we are reconciled to and redeemed by Him, our lives can begin to reflect the light and goodness of who He is in us, with us, and through us. Today, reject hypocrisy and find your true self in the person of Jesus. #BeTheEdge
