I enjoy football, and having grown up in Miami, Fla., I was a bit partial to the Miami Dolphins in the NFL. On the list of all-time great trick plays, the fake spike by Dan Marino is often near the top. “In the 1994 matchup against the Jets, the Dolphins were down three points with less than a minute left in the game. They got a first down on a Marino pass to Mark Ingram Sr., setting up first and goal on the Jets’ eight-yard line with 38 seconds to go. The offense then rushed to get set at the line of scrimmage as Marino motioned for a spike to stop the clock. At the snap, the defensive line barely moved, assuming Marino would throw the ball to the turf. Instead, he floated an easy pass to Ingram in the end zone, leaving the Jets—and the commentators—stunned. It was a brilliant piece of deception that sealed the win for the Dolphins” (WatchMojo). Trick plays can be very fun and exciting, especially when your team pulls them off. In this verse, Solomon is making it clear that not only plays but also plans cannot succeed against the Lord. There is nothing intellectual or practical that can stop God’s success where He desires it. As much as being on a team that pulls off beautiful trick plays can be fun and exciting, being on a team with a coach who can never be outsmarted and ultimately never loses is even better. When considering the Christian faith and our future, the things happening in the world around us can tend to make us worry and doubt about possible outcomes. One of the great gifts from God is that His word is entirely true, and we can read the end and see exactly how all of this winds up: God wins.
