“Wisdom has built her house; she has set up its seven pillars.”
This reminds me of a popular movie line. In City Slickers, Jack Palance’s character, Curly, shares his secret of life: “One thing, just one thing. You stick to that…” Here Solomon mentions “seven pillars.” In the same way that Curly didn’t have a clear one thing, there is a lot of discussion about the meaning of Solomon’s seven pillars. As I’ve shared before, there are no wasted words in Scripture, and although theologians have varied opinions on the significance of the seven, we can rest in knowing it is not random. An overriding explanations is that they symbolize perfection and stability. In Hebrew thought, the number seven represented completeness, perfection, and order as established by God. Those sound pretty good to me, and in the context of the verses surrounding this one, it certainly fits. Wisdom’s home is built with perfection and stability, as opposed to folly, which builds a house that is weak and destined for destruction. Our lives choose one of these two options—wisdom or folly—and how we stand in the trials and storms of life reveals which we chose. The fruit of the Spirit is a great nine pillars to build our lives on. So are numerous other gifts given by God to His children. Ultimately, I believe the two most powerful pillars for Jesus’ followers are loving Him and being kind—the two greatest commandments. Today, find stability in the wisdom of God. #BeTheEdge
