“For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their own great folly.”

Overweight people die 5 to 15 years earlier than those who are not overweight—a similar range to the reduced lifespan of smokers. The list of bad habits and their connection to early death is long. This is a visible and undeniable picture of death as a result of mostly undisciplined living. I’m certainly not pointing fingers—I could stand to lose at least 10 pounds myself. Paul takes the deeper truth of this verse to a powerful spiritual level. Timothy tells us that while physical training is valuable, spiritual training is far more so. In some ways, physical discipline can be easier than spiritual discipline. Both can have a “box-checking” element, but spiritual growth is more of a growing, engaging lifestyle. I go to the gym about four times a week. I do my seven exercises and check them off on my iPhone list as I go. I don’t need the list—it just feels good to check them off. Spiritual discipline includes regular practices like Bible reading, quiet time, scripture memorization, church attendance, and other habits that can also be checked off a list. Exposure to these practices can enhance spiritual growth. However, living in tune with God—listening for His voice and obeying it—is less defined, but just as powerful. So today, do the things of the Gospel, and listen to the voice of your Savior. #BeTheEdge

“For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.”
