“I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching.”
There is a distinction between the different types of learning. Here Solomon specifically refers to sound learning. There is not a word in Scripture that is extra or without important meaning. If all Scripture is inspired, as Paul tells us in Timothy, then it benefits us to ponder and investigate each word when we look into a passage. Matthew Poole explains that the word sound means good, or “not vain, or foolish, or false, or pernicious counsels, but such as are true and profitable.” That gives valuable depth to the truth in this verse. The word for give in this verse implies that it is ongoing. God does not give us wisdom that becomes stagnant. When He gives wisdom and insight, it is the beginning of a stream of growing understanding. As we grow in our faith and as our journey continues, the wisdom we receive from the Lord expands in meaning. God and His truth are always powerful. But as our experience grows, so do the implications of His truth in our journey. To think we have learned all God has to teach us in an area of life is to risk missing the ongoing, fuller understanding that develops over time and grows our maturity. God does not sit still, and neither does our understanding of Him. Today, learn and keep learning. #BeTheEdge
