“My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart.”

I have always used this and similar passages to encourage Bible memorization. I must confess I’m awful at it myself. Over the years, I’ve found that scripture I have “kept in my heart” has come to mind at very strategic and powerful times. Back in June, a megachurch pastor from Hawaii was interviewed about his secret meeting with a group of pastors in China. During the meeting—at which 18 of the 22 had been imprisoned for their faith—he reviewed some scripture with them. He quickly learned two things: first, they did not have Bibles, only certain passages written on scraps of paper; and second, they had memorized major portions of the Bible, even entire books. He asked about that, and one of the pastors responded, “It is always confiscated first thing. That’s why we memorize it as fast as we can, because even though they can take the paper away, they can’t take what’s hidden in your heart.” Solomon knew the value of instant access to God’s Word. More often than not, I find that I’m not recalling scripture to share with someone—though that is certainly an important reason to internalize it—but rather I find great comfort, guidance, and counsel in many situations throughout my day through the quickening of God’s Spirit, bringing pertinent passages to mind. Today, dwell on His truth and let it embed in your soul. #BeTheEdge
