“Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance—”

Sometimes learning is all about listening—listening to learn, not to respond. When we listen to learn, we lock in on what is being shared. Listening is a gift both to the listener and to the speaker. Yesterday I preached at a local church. As I looked at the crowd to see if they were understanding what I was sharing—or even cared about it—I was blessed by the way they seemed to be locked in. That was truly a gift and a blessing. Perhaps they had learned over the years to look like they were paying intense attention while pondering other things like lunch or the next day’s schedule. The truly wise always listen, even when what is shared is not particularly useful. They listen first as a gift and second as a student. Knowing that some information is not useful helps establish a clearer understanding of truth. A recent article summed it up this way: “The power of listening lies in its ability to foster deeper human connection, build stronger relationships, enhance understanding and empathy, improve decision-making, and boost productivity and creativity. By focusing on the speaker and understanding the meaning behind their words, active listeners demonstrate respect, resolve conflicts, and create an environment where others feel valued and understood. This skill, though challenging, is crucial for navigating complex social and professional situations effectively.” (AI Resource) Jesus was a great listener, and He called us to listen well to Him. Often His statements started with the phrase, “Let those who have ears hear.” In the original language He was saying, “Don’t miss this.” Today, when you hear Him—listen. #BeTheEdge
