“The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh—an inspired utterance. This man’s utterance to Ithiel: ‘I am weary, God, but I can prevail.’”
I was with a friend the other day, and he made the comment, “It’s been a long year, Kevin.” I pondered that for a moment and considered some of the things I knew he and his family had been through: the loss of a job, the loss of a family member, empty nesting as his last child graduated college, and a few other challenges. Spread out, each one wears on you, but clumped together they can certainly take an emotional toll. I didn’t have the heart to remind him that the year was only two-thirds over. I know many people going through very hard, even potentially life-crushing, difficulties. I believe many could cry out like our author, “I am weary, God!” That is not an unusual place for a person to find themselves in this broken world. The encouragement comes for the followers of God who can genuinely find the source of strength in the author’s next four words: “but I can prevail.” Buried—or at least implied—in those words for me, and hopefully for you, is a “we.” We—you and me, Lord—can prevail, and will prevail, through His strength, power, and sovereign control over every situation in our lives. That is the hope of the gospel. The good news. The truth that we serve a God who has it all under control. Even when life’s burdens threaten to crush us, we can find in Him our source of strength, joy, and peace firmly holding our lives and writing our story. And we will not only prevail—we will thrive and ultimately have victory for eternity. Today, live as one who knows his future is secure. #BeTheEdge
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV
