“Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint; but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.”
I have always seen this as one of the most instructive verses in Proverbs—not just for business leaders, but for everyone. Where there is no vision or revelation, “the people are unrestrained” or “perish” are two of the most common translations of this verse. I appreciate Eugene Peterson’s modern-day interpretation: “If people can’t see what God is doing, they stumble all over themselves; but when they attend to what he reveals, they are most blessed.” However, this may sum up the author’s intent best: “Where there is no divine revelation, the people cast off restraint and run wild, but blessed is the one who obeys God’s law.” Whatever version you prefer, the overriding principle is powerful. Live with no understanding of God and His call on your story, and life is a disaster. Live within the parameters of how He created you in His universe, and you will find joy and satisfaction. Most ministries and businesses not only have a mission statement, but they also have a vision statement. One definition of a corporate vision statement is: “to inspire and articulate an organization’s long-term, aspirational future, serving as a compelling picture of what success looks like…” (AI resource). God does that for us through His Word, and today we need, as the writer is telling us, those who preach with both their words and their lives the Good News. The word for “cast off restraint” also translates as “perish.” Literally, without God’s Good News of salvation, the person and the people are destined to perish. Today, preach the Good News and, as Augustine said, “when necessary use words.” #BeTheEdge
