“Apply your heart to instruction and your ears to words of knowledge.”
Gardner Mulloy is a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. He won 129 U.S. national titles. He also won five Grand Slam doubles titles, was ranked No. 1 in the United States in 1952, and started the University of Miami tennis program. He swept United States Tennis Association Grand Slams in three age groups: 45s, 70s, and 80s. As an aspiring 14-year-old tennis player, I found myself on the roof of the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami. I stood on a tennis court, being coached by Mr. Mulloy. You can believe that as he addressed every area of my game, I listened to every word. I tried to apply everything he said. He certainly improved my game. That was tennis. In this passage, Solomon is talking about life. Where Gardner helped me have a bit of success and greater enjoyment in the game of tennis, Solomon is encouraging us to find those who will help us live a more impactful and God-focused life. I no longer play tennis, for a variety of reasons — and certainly not competitively in quite a while. But I do live, and I hope to continue living more effectively — a life built on the wisdom and counsel of God’s Word, and by following the example and instruction of those who are out in front of me, living for our King. Incidentally, Gardner was a committed follower of Jesus, too. Today, listen and learn from the wise. #BeTheEdge
