Peter clearly knew the Proverbs. In chapter 4 of 1st Peter, he says almost the same thing Solomon does in the first half of this verse. Jesus Himself spoke often about love. It’s a love that is compassionate, caring, and willing to overlook faults.” (AI resource) I love the story told by the early church fathers about the Apostle John. Not long before his death, they would carry him on a pallet to visit the churches. Each time he was asked to share a word with the gathered believers, he would simply say, “Love one another.” The people would thank him and ask for more, but again he would repeat, “Love one another.” No matter how many times they pressed him, his message never changed: “Love one another.” Jesus summed up all 613 Jewish commandments into just two. The second was this: love your neighbor as yourself. Scripture also tells us that God is love. Love is not just a feeling—it is an action.
