“Hopes placed in mortals die with them; all the promise of their power comes to nothing.”
Several individuals are recognized for actions that prevented major catastrophes, effectively “saving the day” in significant ways. These include figures like “Stanislav Petrov, who averted a potential nuclear war, and Norman Borlaug, credited with saving potentially billions from starvation. Other examples include Vasili Arkhipov during the Cuban Missile Crisis and Alan Turing’s code-breaking efforts during World War II.” (AI resource) Solomon would no doubt have been impressed by these people and their impact on humanity. The list of such heroes is almost endless. The inventors of insulin should also be on that list. Without diminishing their incredible contributions, Solomon wants us to be aware that each of these men eventually died—and we will as well. That truth demands that we look beyond any contribution a person makes to humanity and look to the One who is the sole focus of our hope. Hope is a critical part of the human experience. God built the ability to experience it into each of us. It is a gift He uses to create a longing in us for the eternal, beyond any one person’s life. The only worthy focus of our hope is God Himself. Today, look to Him. #BeTheEdge
