“Can a man walk on hot coals without his feet being scorched?”

You might read this and think the answer is yes. It’s not. What we hear about at times in firewalking stories is rooted in physics and careful technique. It is not a casual stroll over hot coals. This verse is speaking specifically about adultery. Over the years, we have certainly confronted that issue while traversing the Parables. In fact, most of this chapter deals with that very topic. As far as Solomon was concerned, sexual sin was one of the most critical issues that young men needed constant, clear instruction about. He knew that, more than any other sin, it could not only trip them up in their walk with Jesus—it could knock them out of the race altogether. He had seen it limit his father after his sin with Solomon’s mother. He had watched it ravage his kingdom. Although God continued to have His hand on His people, this one sin upended many lives. Just yesterday, I read about a large church that released two longtime, impactful pastors—not because of their own sexual sin, but because they did not respond firmly enough to a sin uncovered in their lead pastor. That sin was 40 years old. The tentacles of sin reach far. They touch many lives. Of course, God can and will forgive any sin. But the consequences still reverberate through the stories of others. Today, avoid sexual sin.
