“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”
This is a powerful truth. I have seen many examples of families who began teaching their children about God and His truth even before they were born. They made a conscious decision to build their marriage and family on His principles. This verse is not about overreaction. No one accomplishes this verse with perfection. Often, some of the greatest lessons a child learns while growing up come from seeing how a follower of Christ seeks forgiveness. Children who grow up in the light of Christ live more secure and stable lives, regardless of what the world throws at them. It’s no accident that just a few verses earlier, Solomon speaks about being aware of danger and preparing for it. That, too, is part of growing up in a Kingdom household. Believers families face many of the same challenges as non-believing ones—they simply handle them differently. They look to the sovereign strategy of God at work in every situation. This verse can sometimes feel discouraging to those who raised children before knowing Christ, as if they are somehow left out. That is not the truth. I have been deeply moved by how children respond when a parent finds Christ and has their life transformed. More often than not, the children follow the parent’s example, turn to Jesus, and are changed as well. Today, help create an environment of faith—whether at work or at home. #BeTheEdge
