“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

The book of Proverbs was initially intended primarily for young men. Over time, it has come to be recognized as valuable—though often basic—for people of all ages. This verse is considered an overarching summary of the book’s message. More than any other part, the first ten words of this verse stand out: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” To understand and live by this sentence is seen as the key to Solomon’s main point for youth beginning their journey of knowing and following God. Missing the truth in this verse renders the rest of Proverbs little more than a collection of pithy and interesting sayings. A genuine respect for who God is—and who we are in His story—is essential. Without it, we are left adrift in a world of questions and confusion. It becomes the existentialist’s dilemma, surrendered to a life without answers. The existentialist believes we spend our lives pursuing the answers to these questions: Who am I? Why am I here? Where am I going? God holds the only true answers to these fundamental questions of existence. In contrast, the secular therapist may believe their role is to help the individual live a fulfilling life while accepting that these questions have no ultimate answers. What a dark and hopeless way to live. The believer knows these questions are answered in God alone. We are unique, supernatural creations of the one and only, all-powerful, and all-loving God. We are here to know and serve Him, and we are headed toward eternity with Him in heaven. Now that is true meaning and purpose. Today, live in His truth and grow in your respect and knowledge of who He is. #BeTheEdge
