“The righteous detest the dishonest; the wicked detest the upright.”
That’s a pretty clear distinction. Solomon does this often—he talks about blessing or curse. He distinguishes dark from light, leaving no room for gray. Here, he lets us know that the righteous and the wicked, deep in their souls, are at odds with each other. We share a planet, communities, and workspaces. We can enjoy each other’s company, but at our core, there is no place to truly appreciate the one the other serves. Some of my best friends don’t know Jesus yet. I love and care deeply about them. Scripture asks, “What fellowship has light with darkness?” So this is tricky. We are to be in the world, just not of it. We are to settle into communities and build a life. We are to be at peace with everyone. This is not a verse about judgment—it’s a statement about the reality of the two masters. All believers will readily confess to serving God. Unbelievers may claim to serve no one, or to serve themselves or a cause. But those are ultimately expressions of serving Satan. That sounds harsh, but it’s true. As the great theologian Bob Dylan once said, “You’re gonna have to serve somebody. It may be the devil, or it may be the Lord, but you’re gonna have to serve somebody.” He was right. Our job isn’t to point out whom others serve. It’s to serve God with every ounce of our being and pray for others to find Him. Today, serve God only.

“But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15 NIV
