“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”

I had a few of the grandkids over the other day. The youngest, six-year-old Harris, looked me in the eyes like he was waiting for a reaction and said, “We have church every day.” I responded, “Tell me about that.” His sister, who’s seven, said in a tone only older siblings can master, “We have a quiet time.” She went on to tell me about all the things on their new daily list: eat vegetables, exercise (run around the house 10 times), do a chore, and have a quiet time with God. I let them know what a great idea that is. I told them I have a quiet time every day too—and even Jesus started His days alone with His Father. This is a great example of what Solomon was talking about. There is so much more I could say, but I must confess—after decades of ministry with teenagers—that if they all had these four practices from an early age, they would grow to be healthier and live more powerful, stable, God-honoring lives. A pastor I greatly respect once shared that the word “old” in the original language means “grows hair on their chin.” That gives us a short window to prepare our children. It also shows the power of equipping those around us with the wisdom and knowledge of how to know and walk intimately with God. It is never too late. Although learning with God is a lifelong process, we can get off to a very quick start with the basics. Take the example of a six- and seven-year-old, and you’ll be well on your way. Today, train up yourself—and as much as they’ll allow you—those around you. #BeTheEdge
