“The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.”
I am a firm believer that just about everyone could benefit from competent counseling at some point in their life—most of us, more than once. The loss of a loved one, for example, can be eased with the help of a wise, outside counselor who can guide and monitor how someone is navigating the grieving process. Left unmonitored, grief can become a destructive influence on a person’s future. Self-medicating, avoidance, and other unhealthy ways of coping with grief have ruined too many lives. The list of other life circumstances that could benefit from wise counsel is long and unique to each individual. In a slightly self-serving way, I believe strongly in professional counseling for many issues—self-serving in that my graduate studies were in counseling\psychology. However, God’s family is also full of men and women gifted in both wisdom and the ability to help others look deeply into their hearts for healing and direction. I see this in business mentors all the time. I also see the danger in counselors or business professionals who do not know God or His truth. True healing begins with recognizing where the sickness or brokenness lies. That said, it’s also possible to get stuck in excessive “navel-gazing.” One of the beautiful things about God and His people is that He took all of our flaws and brokenness into account when He designed how we would serve and impact His Kingdom. Perfection was never a prerequisite for service. Today, find those who can speak wisdom into your journey—and keep going. #BeTheEdge
