“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

The ministry I work for has this as their foundational verse. I used to think there were better verses that more specifically spoke to the area of ministry we are involved in within society. Over time, I have come to see why God chose this verse for us. When I first shared this verse many years ago with a group of mostly non-Christian teenagers, I introduced it as an ancient Jewish proverb that basically says God wants us to help each other become better people. It still is. It’s a great verse about looking out for, protecting, and building up one another. It’s a powerful visual challenge for us as warriors—to do battle on behalf of each other. Mostly, though, it reminds us that just as a sharp tool is made sharper and fit for use by rubbing it against an iron chisel or another iron tool, so our lives are made fit for use by the Creator as we interact with and test each other. No tool is sharpened by itself. Dullness comes naturally through use, and reshaping is needed to maintain usefulness. Lives are the same. It is always important to evaluate who plays the sharpening role in our lives. Today, seek out that interaction. #BeTheEdge
