“Do not lust in your heart after her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.”
Lust is a major societal problem. It destroys individuals and families, and it poisons communities. The sources of temptation that lead to lust permeate all aspects of society. I was once having a conversation with a football player from a major university. I asked him about his church attendance, and his response was, “I struggle to go. I find myself spending too much time unable to avoid looking at how the women are dressed. It’s a real issue for me.” I’m not making a judgment about how women dress for church, but it highlights the level of struggle for some men who have grown up in this sex-saturated society. Jay Kessler once said that today’s junior high students face more sexual temptation on their way to and from school than our grandfathers did when they went out looking for it on Saturday nights. The reality is that this challenge has existed for men and women since before Solomon’s time. God would not ask the impossible of us; therefore, He has an answer. Part of that answer is certainly avoiding temptation, whether online, in movies, or through other media. It also means staying out of places and situations that tend to expose us to more temptation. The most important way God provides to avoid this temptation and sin is to train our minds. It’s part of what He means when He tells us to take every thought captive. A disciplined mind is what defeats all types of sin. Today, flee sin and focus on God. #BeTheEdge
